Now, I’ll admit us fellas aren’t used to doing two or more things at once. It’s simply not in our genes. But, if we really stretch ourselves you never know what kind of miracles can happen.
Here’s the thing, have you ever found it odd that most gym programs have you doing cardio and strength training separately? Yep, one thing at once. A bloke obviously thought it up. You know the program I’m talking about – 30 minutes on the cardio machines followed by 30 minutes on doing weights.
The question is why? Do we get a better strength gain? Or does it make us fitter doing it that way? No it doesn’t. I believe most of the sessions you do should have a combination of both. Just keep in mind that keeping it high intensity is vital.
Next time you’re in the gym have a crack at this. You can even time yourself. Use good technique but move through as quickly as you can. It’s tough, but to me this is what I want my body to be able to do. Be strong and fit at the same time. Can I be strong while my heart rate is racing? Can I keep going hard with my cardio when my muscles are burning? Can I do two things at once? Can I kill two birds with one dumbbell?
You can further mix these programs around as much as you like. You just need to move fast between exercises and work hard on the cardio. Go on try it!
